Our story – Redesigning traditional gymnastics boxes for

Lockdown

During Covid my wife and I attempted to set up two workspaces in our Berlin apartment. With gyms and yoga studios closed, we also looked for possibilities to exercise within the confines of our home. Since we couldn't find anything meeting our needs and available space I reached to my former classmate Jochen who is an industrial designer. Jointly we created a versatile, sustainable piece of furniture that can be used as an office workstation and be incorporated into an exercise routine while only requiring very little space.

Our journey

We started by redesigning vintage German gymnastics boxes. These were sawn open, a stable base, hinges and a gas strut were inserted. The interior was fitted with modular compartments to store yoga mats, office- and gym essentials. We were thrilled with the result and found new uses for them every day. We were surprised by the multitude of sitting, movement and exercise options and stopped sitting on traditional chairs altogether. The vintage boxes sold out quickly. With only a limited amount of vintage boxes available in good condition available, we decided to take different route.

The Turnbox 2.0

We reached out to a traditional manufacturer of German gym equipment. He was excited about our out-of-the box :-) idea. The design and workings of the box were further refined by the manufacturer’s master craftsman. A vegan cover consisting of durable high quality fabric was created as an alternative to the the traditional leather cover. I continue to adjust and customize the interior compartments of every box.

I am certain that you will enjoy looking and using our Turnvergnügen products as much as we do!
